So, lately I was having trouble with X-Plane 11. I was still getting a studder that would come and go. When it was present, it would drive me crazy. When it was gone it would run so smooth. I couldn’t pin down the problem until now.
I did some research, testing and discovered the solution to my problem.
Now this solution is for anyone running Oculus Rift in X-Plane 11. I just tested and it is still a valid fix for the new 11.20 version of X-Plane 11.
So this solution may work for you. There are lots of different things that could be happening if you have studders. For example, you could be over working your computer and/or your settings could just be too high.
Saying that, I thought that was my problem until I discovered that the problem was that I had my ASW on auto. You might be wondering what ASW is and for the most part you don’t need to worry about this, however in this case you should pay attention to it. ASW is Asynchronous Spacewarp. It is a way for the developers to make your Oculus Rift run smooth when you are not running at 90 fps (most computers won’t be able to get 90 fps with X-Plane 11). Scroll down if you want to skip to the step by step solution to the problem.
It appears when you have ASW on auto, that your computer automatically selects between ASW and no ASW. In either mode, it appears to run fine, however for some reason, during the transition appears to be the problem. If you look up at the blue sky there is nothing for the computer to render. When you look at your airplane or at the nearby airport, your computer has lots to render. It appears to be the transition between the two that causes this delay. There might be more to this, however this is what I notice. If you shake your head back and forth with the Oculus and you notice it is studdering, then you probably have this problem… or your settings are too high. Before you go and lower your settings, try this.
This appears to a problem if you use your mouse for anything on your monitor. It also happens to me with a after-market plane I use. It is definitely worth a try if you haven’t tried this. It erased all my studders and made my flight experience 100 times better.
