3 Easy Tips for Prescriptions Glasses in VR

Are you visually challenged and have those pesky glasses on your face. It can be disappointing to think about how amazing VR would be, just to have your hopes dashed when you remember you will need to shove a pair of glasses in the VR Headset. Will they fit? is there any other way? Lucky for you, there are solutions out there.

First, lets start with the obvious solution… that sometimes gets overlooked.

1. Contact Lenses

Why not try contact lenses as an easy solution. I know not everyone will be able to use contact lenses, however if you can use contact lenses, this may be your easiest solution to the problem.

It really is one of the best options, as this will prevent any discomfort of trying to put your glasses inside the Oculus Rift.

2. Glasses inside the VR Headset?

Trying to get your glasses inside your headset can work great according to a https://www.vrheads.com/tips-wearing-glasses-your-vr-headset, however I would make sure that you are careful. I have heard that sometimes this can be an uncomfortable option, as it pushes on your glasses in order to get them to fit properly (see video below).

I did a quick experiment with a pair of glasses and found that it worked when I wore some glasses. There was enough room in the Oculus Rift for the glasses, however I did note that there was slight pressure on the top of my nose. I would classify it as a slight discomfort. Maybe with a slim pair of glasses, this might work great.

Here is a great resource from a forum for anyone that wants to fit those glasses in the Rift.  In the post they have photos and measurements to help get a great picture of what works https://forums.oculusvr.com/community/discussion/37864/wearing-glasses-in-the-rift.

As well as the above link, I have also included this video which was made by Games Radar. It essentially shows you how he was able to put his glasses on under the Oculus Rift. In the video he does mention that you need to significantly tighten the rift in order to keep the light out, which essentially pushes the glasses against your head. This can cause a bit of pain according to him.

3. Specially designed lens for the VR headset

Next, is the commercially designed solution. This solution appears to be the best option, however you do have to spend a few dollars to get it setup.  VR Lens Labs is a company that creates aftermarket glasses and lens inserts. You can take a look at the options here http://vr-lens-lab.com/lens-adapters/. Please note that I am NOT an affilliate to this product. I just believe that it is a great solution for anyone struggling with glasses.

Now I find that a lot of people have tons of questions in regards to these lenses, so here are some of the answers that VR Lens Labs provides to some of the questions I found are common.

  • What are the lenses made out of?
They use higher quality polymer lenses that have a 2 micron dip coating and are not adversely affected by alcohol wipes but cleaning them with a microfiber towel and a water and soap solution is recommended.
  • Do the Lenses affect the screen quality?
No. The lenses do not affect the screen quality in any way
  • Once installed are the lenses secure?
Yes. The lenses click into place inside the HMD.
  • Are the lenses easy to remove?
Yes. A simple twist and they come right out
  • How close are the lenses to your eyes? Do your eyelashes touch them?
They are not close. Your lashes should not touch them and there should be no discomfort.
  • Is there any chance that the lens holders will damage the fabric of the Rift?
The lens holders will only make contact with the plastic frame of the Rift. It should never touch the fabric.

VR Lens Labs even has a form for you in order to help you size your lens.

Conclusion

So, in the end, it comes down to finding the solution that will work for you. As this is a very popular topic, I will continue to research any ideas that come out in regards to this issue.
