It has been awhile since I released my VR Settings I am using for VR in X-Plane 11. Things have changed since I last released the settings. In fact, I believe I may have even been using Fly Inside at that time. If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, it is no longer required to run VR in X-Plane 11.
So to start, my computer has also had a bit of an upgrade, which does give me more room to play with my settings. I went from a 1060 6GB graphics card to a 1080ti. This upgrade has made a big difference, however I also stumbled across a secret weapon that gives me a better experience with higher settings. I’ll go into that detail a few paragraphs below.
Currently I am running an i5-7500K CPU that is stock with a 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor, however I have overclocked it to 4.8GHz. This is a great processor to overclock, however it is almost time for me to upgrade this.
My graphics card is now a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which was last years top of the line card. Now there is a 2080 series, however I feel as though the 1080ti does a great job.
I currently run 16 GB of DDR4 Ram, however I believe having 32 GB would be perfect.
I also have fans all over my CPU, which makes it sound like a plane when it heats up, however it allows me to keep the computer running at a great temperature. I was able to add the fans because I put the PC together myself.
I tend to adjust my settings constantly, however I am one of the people, who is always looking to squeeze that last drop out of his sim. This is one reason I overclocked my CPU. I haven’t overclocked my GPU as I feel that my CPU needs an upgrade in order to keep up to the beefy GPU.
So, I do adjust my sim depending on where I am flying and what I am flying. Some of the ORBX scenery is very intense and requires my settings to be a bit lower, however the settings I am going to show you are setup for my ORBX scenery. This way, you can use my settings and then slowly increase or decrease the world objects to get your perfect settings. I feel like showing you the worst case scenario will help you out the most.

There has always been a golden rule that says, you must always keep your VR settings to a point where your sim at a Frame Rate of 45 FPS or more. This has been the standard and the minimum that anyone will run a sim in VR, however I recently broke this rule and loved the results. So, please take it or leave it, however I found that I could get incredible results by limiting the sim to running at 30 FPS. If you have a more powerful CPU, this may not give you the same boost, however it is worth a try.
You may be thinking, how I could handle that frame rate. Well the truth is, I didn’t have any stutters, and I was able to run with the settings that were not obtainable without it. This is something you should at least try if you are struggling with finding that sweet spot.
In order to limit the FPS of the sim to 30 in VR, I installed two programs. The first is Fly with Lua. This program allows you to install the second program, which is OVR Settings. Once you have both of these installed, go to OVR Settings in your sim and you can limit your Oculus Rift to 30 FPS. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Maybe it is just me, however I think it really works great.
