Welcome to the VR Flight World
I'm here to help you get involved in the most amazing experience you can have outside an airplane! Can you imagine flying whenever you want? That's why I am here, to help get you setup. I want you to experience VR Flight and have that sense of freedom that comes with VR. I know you will love it and I want to help make the journey as painless as possible.
Since 2017, I have been helping people like you get in the air with VR Flight. I have built this business in order to serve the flight sim and flight training community. I hope you enjoy VR Flight as much as I do.
What is VR Flight?
So VR Flight is short form for Virtual Reality Flight Simulation, which is probably one of the newest technologies to come to the flight simulation world. If you have never flown a flight simulator, you won't understand the depth of realism that these simulators are capable of. They are impressive pieces of hardware. When you add virtual reality to the mix, you have a very powerful piece of equipment that can have many uses.
What can it do?
When you fly with a flight simulator, you can essentially simulate anything you could with a real world plane. For example, if you need to simulate an emergency landing, you can easily do this by setting up a failure in your simulator. Most of the sims out there have very realistic flight modeling, which means that the sim will fly the way the real plane would fly.
Who should use this?
If you are a pilot or maybe you just love flight, then VR Flight will be for you. I have heard from many people who say that once you get into VR Flight, it is very difficult to go back to flying with a monitor. You can try but from my experience, you won't be able to do it.

Where Should You Start?
You may as well start by taking a look at what VR Flight actually looks like. Please note that I am going to go over some very important items in this article, so please keep reading to find out what you need to know before getting started in VR.
Quick Example of VR Flight in Action
What if I don't know how to fly?
We all know that the equipment is very important to someone getting into flight simulation, however the one thing that is just as important is the knowledge. Flying without any idea on how to fly makes the sim into a game. It takes away the realism. Now, I am going to recommend an amazing flight instructor who truly believes in flight simulation as a training aid. His name is Rod Machado (affiliate link). You may even recognize his name, as he was the flight instructor on FSX. Now, on top of his really easy to listen to style of teaching, he also has a very impressive resume. He started instructing in 1973 and has 10,000 hours of flight under his belt. If you interested in doing things the right way, then I highly recommend any of Rod's training or books. Please note that these are affiliate links. Again, I only promote stuff that I believe in. This is one instructor that I truly believe in. So, I do hope that you take a look.
View From Inside the Oculus Rift
Now, this is very important for anyone looking to purchase the Oculus Rift. You may see my videos and think, "Wow, it's so crisp and clear". Why do people say it is hard to read... I can see everything on this YouTube video.
Well, the people(including myself) are not trying to trick you into believing it is amazingly clear... because it isn't perfect. The reason you see the view perfectly crisp and clear, is that when they record the video, it is recorded from what is on the monitor. The monitor is essentially mirroring the image from the headset. So the view you see is more like the view you would get if running X-Plane on the monitor itself.
It's like viewing a 1080 screen, but sticking your nose against the screen. It's just not going to be as clear that way.
The best way I can explain the view is by showing you my youtube video where I used a GoPro to film inside the actual Oculus Rift Headset. The new Oculus Rift S now has better graphics but it is still not perfect.

(*** Update *** the video above is the Oculus Rift, however the Oculus Rift S boasts a more crisper image then the Oculus Rift)
What Equipment do You need?
So, now it's time to think about what equipment and software that you will want to use for VR Flight. Below is a list of the equipment I recommend and use for VR Flight. Please note that the links below are Amazon Affiliate links. This means that I do earn a small commission if you use my link. It doesn't affect your purchase or price in anyway and I really do appreciate the support. It helps me to keep putting out great content for you.

What About the Computer?
No, I didn't forget about the computer. In fact the computer is probably the most important part to a VR Setup. A weak computer can ruin the VR experience. So in short there are a few major components that you need to watch for.
- Great Graphics Card (at this time the top of the line is the GTX 2080ti)
- Great CPU
- Lots of RAM (at this time get at least 16 GB of RAM... more is better. Most computers will let you add more RAM later)
- A decent amount of hard drive space. (At least 500GB but preferably a 1TB or higher)
So, the bigger the better when it comes to VR. If you can afford it, get the top of the line computer. Now... can you get away with less. You sure can. A GTX 2070 would do the trick, however you may not be 100% future proof as flight sims get more and more graphic intensive.
Out of the above list, I would really focus on the graphics card, as most modern PC's will come with a decent CPU... At least any gaming PC will.
Last thing I will mention about this, is if you want to see the price of any of the products, you will have to take a look in Amazon. The prices are always changing and because of this I can't post them on my site.
Take a look below for a list of a couple PC's that I feel will be great in VR Flight.
BUDGET PC - VR FlIGHT PC (Under $1200)
Home Built
To get a PC for under the $1200 mark, I suguest that you consider building your own PC. Yes, it takes much more work and research. It even has a bit more risk, however when you are looking to get the most out of you money, this is probably the best option. You can select exactly what you want in your PC. You can keep the cost down a bit by adding only the items that you want.
This is the option I like the best because I like to see every part that goes into my PC. I have built a PC in the past and it is nice because I was able to select parts in which I could later upgrade to.
MID RANGE - VR FlIGHT PC ($1200 - $1500)
CyberpowerPC
This is our Mid-Range VR Flight PC. This PC is far from average and is a very powerful computer. I wrestled with calling this a mid-range PC, as it is more of a top performer if you compare it to any other market. However when you talk about VR Flight, you talk about a different set of standards.
This PC runs a powerful 3.6 GHz i7-9700k with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 super 8GB graphics card. It has 8 USB ports and is liquid cooled. This computer will be able to push hard and will be a great addition to any VR Flight setup. This PC will definitly get you up and running in VR Flight. Just keep in mind that for VR Flight, it is not the top PC, so you will probably have to remember this when adjusting your graphics.
HIGH END - VR FlIGHT PC ($1500 - $3000)
CyberpowerPC
This is our High End VR Flight PC pick. This PC is a true beast!. It will handle almost anything you throw at it. VR Flight Sim will probably be the toughest thing you can give it, and it will handle this too. This PC comes with a 3.6 GHz Intel Core i7 and a deditcated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card. It has 2 2.0 USB ports and 6 3.0 ports. 1 TB Flash Memory Solid State Drive with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM.
TOP PERFORMER - VR FLIGHT PC (Over $3000)
Corsair One
i164 Compact Gaming PC, i9-9900K, Liquid-Cooled RTX 2080 Ti, 960GB M.2, 2TB HDD, 32GB
This is our Top Pick. If you weren't flying a VR Flight Sim, then I would say that this is overkill, however with VR Flight Simulation you need all the power you can get. And this PC really fills that requirement. This PC is not for the faint of heart, so if you are not 100% ready to spend the money, you may want to look at my other choices.
It is running an i9-9900k eight-core porcessor, with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. It has 32 GB of DDR4 SDRAM. This PC is even liquid cooled, allowing you to get the most possible out of the system.
VR FLIGHT LAPTOP ($2000 +)
ASUS
Yes, you can even do VR Flight on a laptop. Keep in mind that you will be limited in USB ports, however this one comes with 5. You can always grab a splitter to increase the number of ports. This is an amazing laptop with incredible power. This comes with an RTX 2080 and an i7-9750H. This PC packs a big punch for such a small package.
If you want to get into VR Flight, then I would recommend that you stick with a full size PC due to the price, however if you need something compact, this is your PC.
What Flight Sim Software Should I Use?
There are lots of great flight sims out there that are great. My favourite is by far, X-Plane 11. There are many reasons why X-Plane 11 is on the top of my list. The main reason is that it appears to have one of the most realistic flight models out there. Don't get me wrong, the other sims are still amazing, however X-Plane 11 really get's the job done.
A few of the other sims are Aerofly FS 2, P3D, DCS and FSX. There is also a new sim coming out that I am very interested to try. This sim is Deadstick Flight simulator, however this has not come out at the time of writing.
Probably the biggest and most exciting announcement in VR Flight is the news that a new Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 will be released in 2020. This new flight sim is suppose to come with VR and looks incredible.
What About Helicopters?
So you love helicopters! I do too, but I don't have the skills to show you everything you need to know about a helicopter. Instead, I would love to recommend you to Sérgio Costa, a Helicopter Sim guru, who has a thriving helicopter community over at HeliSimmer.com. I recommend you take a look if you are interested in helicopter flight.
Here is an interview with Sergio on my Podcast.
Also if you would like to see my helicopter skills in action, take a look at my YouTube Video where I take a flight in a helicopter.
One on One Flight Training?
If you want one on one training with a real life flight instructor, CFI and CFII, then take a look at zerosideslip.com
Please note that the above link is not an affiliate link, however VR Flight World is affiliated with Zero Sideslip. If you mention that you came from VR Flight World, then VR Flight World gets a small commision. We really appreciate the support as this helps us to keep the lights on around here.
Where Do I Go From Here?
We are barely scratching the surface of what you can do in a flight simulator. There is so much that you can do. In fact I have many more blog posts, podcast episodes and YouTube Videos for you to dig into. Here are a few to get you going.
