Oculus Rift Lens Video Project
Now, you may say that you have seen many videos where they show a VR view of X-Plane 11 and you are right, but there is one difference. Almost every video you have seen, where someone is playing a VR game, is not actually displaying the video from the lens of the Oculus Rift itself. All of the videos you have seen are using a mirror image of the Oculus Rift. This is the best way to capture VR for a video, but it doesn’t let you see through the actual lens.
It is really the only way to capture the VR footage, without sticking a camera inside the lens. Well in this video, we are doing just that. We are sticking a GoPro camera inside the lens. It is not the easiest thing to do, so you will see the camera move around a bit and the camera loses focus once or twice.
This video isn’t for the person who wants to watch a flight, as I am just sitting on the runway with the engine going. This video is for the person who is interested in buying an Oculus Rift (affiliate link). It gives you that real world perspective of the lens.
You may have noticed I added affiliate link beside Oculus Rift. This is because I get a small commision anytime someone purchases from my link. Feel free to use the link as it helps to support me and my content building. It won’t affect your purchase or price in anyway.
Now, am I going to keep recording all my videos this way…. Definitely not. This is a horrible way to record my flights as I would not be able to put my head in the Oculus Rift. There is no fun in that. I will be recording the majority of my flights on the mirror image that displays on my screen.
Some things to Note
– The video appears to blur slightly when it moves from side to side. This is not the Oculus Rift producing this effect. It is something that occurred when I used the GoPro to record the lens. When I have it on my head, there is no blurring when I move my head.
– The Screen door effect is there in the video, and you can see it, however when you are wearing the Oculus Rift, this is less noticeable because you are focusing with two eyes beyond the pixels. Essentially it is like when you look in a mirror. At first you see your face, but if you focus on the mirror itself, you might see a smudge. Once you look back at your face, the smudge is gone again. This happens with the screen door effect. If you are looking for it, it can be found, however 9 times out of 10 you won’t even see it.
– The large circle background in the video is the outline of the actual lens. As I am using a GoPro camera, the lens from the GoPro captures a very wide view and sees the edges of the lens. When you put your face inside the Oculus Rift, you don’t see the edges of the lens when you are wearing the Oculus Rift.
Hope this helps.
If you are interested in buying an Oculus Rift, I will include my Amazon link below.
